We would like to announce that Frederick M Serfass of Pottstown, PA, died Monday March 24th 2025 of natural causes. He was the husband of Hettie (Betty) E. (Whitmore) Serfass. They would have been married 73 years this coming October.
Born on July 21, 1932 in Stroudsburg PA, Fred was the first son of Harry and Anna Serfass and a graduate of Stroudsburg High School. Upon graduation and a brief stint at East Stroudsburg University, he joined the USAF in 1952 and completed his basic training at Fort Drum NY. Following his time at Fort Drum, Fred was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas for 3 years with his final 10 months spent in Germany. This was the start of a 33 year career in the military, which ended with his retirement in 1985 at the rank of Lt Colonel with the Army Reserve.
Upon his completion of 4 years of active duty, he attended Mansfield University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in educational counseling. Later, he received his Master degree in school administration from Penn State. Fred eventually went to work for the Mountain View School District in Susquehanna County PA as an elementary school principal.
In 1968 he accepted a job as the Director of Elementary Education for the Pottstown School District, where he oversaw 7 elementary schools. After leaving PSD in 1972, Fred took on the role as the Superintendent of the Fleetwood School District, also in Pennsylvania. He always commented that this was the perfect job for him and he loved his 14 years that he spent there. In 1986 he retired from the Pennsylvania school system.
Upon his retirement, he went full force into his hobby of collecting and working on antique cars, trucks, tractors, and just about anything mechanical, with his favorite being Model A Fords, of which he owned over 20 throughout his life. His first Model A was bought by him when he was only 18 years old and he consistently owned one or another for the next 74 years. He even wrote and published a book on them, the “Model A Ford Q & A Workshop Manual”.
In addition to his wife, Betty, Fred is survived by a large and loving family including: his sons Rex A. Serfass, husband of Cheryl Serfass (Macungie, PA) and Mark D. Serfass (Douglassville PA), three grandchildren, Nicki Rioux wife of Randal (Drexel Hill, PA), Ashley Serfass, wife of Christian Aragon (Phoenixville. Pa), and Adam Serfass, husband of Ashley (Elverson, PA), his two great-grandchildren, Noah Mountain and Marceline Serfass, and a brother Richard Serfass of Montrose Pa. He was predeceased by a brother Carl Serfass of Stroudsburg Pa.

I always enjoyed being around Fred. His knowledge of Autobiles and there History was truly amazing. I will miss his way of explaining how things worked. RIP Fred
Fred was a “man of the people.”
Mark, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. You know how much I loved that man! One of the things I missed most when I retired from the Museum was your dad coming in and sitting with me. I loved hearing his stories. He was one of the best tour guides the Museum had! I hope you know how proud he was of you! Knowing what you could do for the Museum! I will miss him greatly!! Please give your mom a hug for me.
Mark
