Jean (Houck) Wiest, 91, widow of Ralph Y. Wiest, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Freedom Village at Brandywine in Coatesville.

Born in Barto, Jean was the daughter of the late Charles Houck and Dorothy (Derr) Houck.

She worked at the local hosiery mill to put herself through college, and went on to graduate from West Chester University. She began teaching elementary school straight out of college, and thoroughly enjoyed it until her retirement in 1986.

Jean loved the Lord and wanted to serve Him throughout her life. She was a very active member of Good Shepherd UCC in Boyertown where she served in many capacities. She also loved to attend concerts, travel, and visit with friends and family. Her favorite sweet was chocolate, she enjoyed Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, often had pizza parties with the great-grandchildren, and could be found at Shady Maple whenever someone was having a birthday meal.

Jean is survived by two sisters; Lenore Sands (widow of Ardi), and Molly Hallman (widow of Richard); two nephews, one niece, and one grandniece. Surviving also are three step daughters: Rhea Ready (widow of J. Michael), June Kantner (wife of Terry), and Ruth Iffrig (wife of George). This lineage also includes nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jean is predeceased by one nephew.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 10AM to 11AM at Good Shepherd UCC 35 W. Philadelphia Ave. Boyertown, PA 19512. A funeral service will follow at 11AM.

Burial will be in Oley Cemetery Spangsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to Good Shepherd UCC at the above address.

  1. Rest in Peace Dear Friend; Jean and I were classmates and friends in Boyertown High and West Chester Univ.. Her life was serving the Lord with Gladness and to Come before the Lord with Thanksgiving! Rest in the Lord’s arms till we meet again, Peace! and Love……

  3. I had the pleasure of having Miss Houck for grade school at Lincoln Elementary. She was one of my favorite teachers. So tall too! My condolences.

  4. I was so very Sorry to read this. Oh, what a Lovely and fun Lady!! She was at Walnut Woods when I worked there. Her and Lenore always Smiled and just always seemed to have such great times together. I Loved talking to Jean and she knew some friends of mine who she taught in High School. They all loved her. I will miss her!! One of the Best Ladies I got to know. I went back about a month ago to visit n this made me very sad to hear of her passing. I know Lenore isn’t there either. Please accept my Heartfelt Condolences to all of you and her Grandchildren. Lenore was so Fun to. I have 6 Sisters n would be heartbroken if I lost one.
