James D. Himes

In Loving Memory of James D. Himes

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James D Himes (Jim), a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world at the age of 78. Jim departed peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on Wednesday, November 22nd. Born on August 29th, 1945 in Pottstown, Jim was a man with a great sense of humor and a zest for life that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and a profound appreciation for the simple joys that make life beautiful.

A Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, and an accountant for more than 30 years, his favorite job was being a retired Grandpop. Ever the sharp-dressed man, he was happy to trade his suits, cufflinks and expensive ties for cargo pants, flannel shirts and hiking boots. Jim’s deep love for nature was evident in every aspect of his life. Whether he was taking leisurely walks on the beach, hiking through the serene woods, listening to a thunderstorm, tending to his sometimes vibrant, sometimes weedy flower garden, or embarking on adventurous travels with family to explore the world’s natural wonders, he found solace and joy in the great outdoors. He enjoyed carving walking sticks and while he sold a few, he much preferred gifting them to fellow nature lovers.

One of Jim’s greatest pleasures in life was sharing these outdoor experiences with his family, especially his grandsons. His eyes would light up with joy as he regaled them with stories of his encounters with animals in the woods and imparted his wisdom about the wonders of the natural world. He instilled in them a love for adventure and a deep respect for the environment.

No recounting of Jim’s life would be complete without mentioning his sweet tooth. His love for ice cream was a source of delight for all who knew him. Many fond memories were made over shared cones and laughter, creating a bond that will forever be cherished.

Jim is predeceased by father C Douglas Himes; his mother Madeline (Weikel) Himes; his sister Constance Grosser; and his son Matthew Douglas Himes. Jim is survived by his sisters Janet Levengood and Marjorie Blum; his devoted daughters Angela Slaby, Valerie Fiechter, Meredith Bennett, and Marissa Stokes; and his adoring grandsons Maxwell, Luc-Alexandre, Hunter, Julien, Roman, Corson, Warner, Johnathan, Landon, and Camdon. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on November 28th, 2023 at Gatsby’s in Sunnybrook. Those who wish to pay respects can do so from 10:30am to noon.  A light lunch will be served afterwards.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests loved ones honor James’s memory by volunteering a few hours of your time in your local park, reflecting James’s commitment to preserving the beauty of nature for generations to come.

Jim’s memory will forever live on in the rustle of leaves, the crash of waves, the rumble of thunder, the vibrant colors of his garden, the laughter shared over bowls of ice cream, and the enduring love he leaves behind.

May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the beauty he so dearly cherished.

  4. I was so fond of Jim and will miss seeing him everyday when I walk in the woods. He was an inspiring person whose passion for nature sparked many conversations as we walked, in all weather and in all temperatures, in Warwick Park. He offered me comfort as I cared for and then lost my dad after a two-year illness. Jim spoke so fondly of his daughters, grandsons and their dogs; I know his passing leaves a void in many lives and hearts. I wish you all peace and comfort as you learn to navigate the world without him.

  5. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. You have many great memories that you can cherish.

  6. Rest in peace Grandpop. You had a sense of class and a sense of adventure. I’ll always cherish the memories we made at the trailer park in Cape May. Those memories wouldn’t have been possible without you. I love you.

  7. So sorry for your loss. May you all find comfort during this unbelievably difficult time.
