Robert J. Kulp

Robert J. Kulp, 85, of Little Rd. Perkiomenville, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2021 at Powerback Exton.

Born November 6, 1935 in the family home in Anise, PA, he was the son of the late Mabel R. (Kemmerer) and Joshua S. Kulp. He was the 8th generation descendent of George Michael Kolb. George Michael Kolb immigrated to the new world in September 1738. Robert was one of the last generation of children to attend the one room Anise school house.

Robert was a worshipper with the United Church of Christ.  He was employed by Bethlehem Steel in Pottstown for a thirty one year career as a tack welder. He was also a mine helper with Grace Mine in Morgantown and a laborer at a wool plant in Bethlehem. Following his retirement, he was a landscaper for Montgomery County Greenlane Reservoir Park and lastly, for Gilbertsville Golf Course.

Robert was a life member of the Pike Township Sportsmen’s Association and also a member of the former Sassamansville Fire Company where his mother was head cook for many decades, as well as a life member of the United Steelworkers of America.

Surviving is one daughter, Monica Kulp; twin sons, Robert and Richard Kulp and four brothers, Norman A., Joseph R. of Alabama, Charles A. and George A.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond K., William C., and H. Leroy. He was also predeceased by his long time companion, Ruth Bean, whom he met after his divorce.

In his later years, he especially liked going for breakfast at many different restaurants with his children. He learned to drive a tractor at age 12 and could handle any size tractor. Reminiscing about his career and friendships at Bethlehem Steel and the county park gave him many pleasures.

Robert enjoyed attending country and western music concerts with his brothers. One highlight of his life was a one month long road trip with Ruth Bean, his brother, Norman and his wife in 2007.

He suffered two injuries that nearly ended his life. In 1974, at Bethlehem Steel, while picking up a block of wood, he was struck by a steel I beam which fractured his skull. If he were in a standing position, it would have killed him. A 2012 car accident left his right arm partially paralyzed. He quickly recovered and continued driving with a knob on the steering wheel. Otherwise, Robert lived a long healthy life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 11:00AM at Morrell Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA.  A viewing will be held from 10:00 – 11:00AM prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Sassamansville.

Morrell Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
