David G. Merkel

June 6, 1944 – January 2, 2021

 

David George Merkel, age 76, husband of Sylvia Ruth (Wilcox) Merkel of Altoona, PA passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 at UPMC Altoona Hospital.

 

Born in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Warren and Emma (Hoffman) Merkel. His step- father was George Mengel.

 

David was a graduate of Hamburg High School and Berean Bible School. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Nyack Missionary College and a bachelor’s degree in Theology from Westminster Theological Seminary.

 

David served as a Methodist minister for 14 years. He was also a delivery truck driver for Irving’s Bagels in State College.

 

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Sylvia R Wilcox, who he married December 7, 1968; three children; two sons, Stephen Merkel, husband of Karen; Philip Merkel; a daughter, Faith (Merkel) Wright, wife of Keith; two sisters, Anna (Merkel) Ziemer, Shirley (Merkel) Klee; and five grandchildren. David was predeceased by five sisters and eight brothers.

 

Service and internment will be held at Limerick Garden of Memories for the immediate family.
