Johann Foisel

Johann Foisel

Johann Foisel, 94, husband of Maria (Csef) Foisel, of Boyertown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born in Dürrbach, Transylvania, Johann was the son of the late Johann Foisel and Maria (Thellmann) Foisel.

Following a bucolic childhood in Siebenbürgen, his life was uprooted in 1944 when he and his entire community was forced to emigrate to German territories.  After a decade in Austria, Johann settled his young family in Pennsylvania in the 1950s to rebuild from the ground up.  Upon completion of his five-year contract working in Funk’s Orchard in Boyertown, Johann spent the next three decades as a proud union employee at Mrs. Smith’s Pie Company in Pottstown, until his retirement in the 1990s.  Beloved by everyone who had the good fortune to know him, Johann was the consummate gentleman who had a way of always making others around him feel better.  Above all else, Johann’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.  He never missed one sporting event or activity of his grandchildren, and in his later years, he cherished every moment he could spend with his great-grandchildren.  His extraordinary life continues in the wonderful legacy that he leaves behind.

Surviving in addition to his wife, is one daughter; Margaret Bodor, wife of George, as well as two grandsons: Justin Bodor, husband of Jessica, and Brandon Bodor, husband of Alison. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Grayson, Cormick, Charlotte, and Gavin; as well as one sister, Maria (Foisel) Beekman.  Johann is predeceased by two brothers: Martin Foisel and Michael Foisel.

Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at St. Joseph’s Hill Lutheran Church, 244 Koch Rd Boyertown, PA 19512, with funeral service to follow at 10:30AM.  The interment will take place at Hill Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Hill Lutheran Church at the address above.
